Stiff-soled or rocker footwear, orthoses with a Morton extension, and injections.
Key points
Evidence summary in preparation.
Degenerative arthritis of the first metatarsophalangeal joint with dorsal osteophytes, pain and stiffness. Early disease is treated with footwear, orthoses and injections, or cheilectomy. Advanced disease is treated with first MTP arthrodesis, the established standard, or with motion-preserving options such as a synthetic cartilage implant or arthroplasty.
Stiff-soled or rocker footwear, orthoses with a Morton extension, and injections.
Evidence summary in preparation.
Excision of the dorsal osteophyte and part of the metatarsal head, with or without a Moberg osteotomy.
Evidence summary in preparation.
Fusion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint with plate and/or screws.
Evidence summary in preparation.
Motion-preserving options: polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel hemiarthroplasty (e.g. Cartiva), hemi- or total joint replacement.
